Early morning Alotau Fish Market

Every morning before the sun begins to rise. A few people brave the chill and make their way down to the Alotau market wharf.
There along the beach they stand and wait for fishermen who spent the night out on the bay fishing to paddle back to shore. This little known treat in Alotau will snare you the freshest fish in town. The fish is also usually cheaper then the fish sold at the main market.

Of course prices differ according to size and also each fisherman will set their own prices but it still is cheaper then the market. Another plus is that because not many locals go to the beach so you have your pick from different canoes and don’t have to fight the crowds as you would during the day at the main market .

Two things that you must be aware of is that; not all of the fishermen sell their catch, few keep it for personal consumption and while most will clean the fish, others don’t and you might have to do it yourself.

However some fishermen will kindly offer to do the cleaning for you if you wait till they are finished serving other customers.

So if you’re ever in Alotau, Milne Bay Province on a short trip why not head down to the early morning fish market.

The reason why I always tag along when my parents decide to go is to take in the breathtaking view.

Till next time. See ya Mel.
